The components of space:
- Shape
- Level
- Active space
- Performance space
- Planes
- Spatial relationships
- Floor patterns and pathways
- Dimension
- Personal space
Syllabus definition - one of the elements of dance. The dancer moves in and through space. Dance movement takes up space, and a dance is performed in a space. Direction, level size, focus, and pathway are aspects of space
Shape -
Open vs. Closed
Open shapes portray power and confidence. They are accommodating, welcoming, loving and free.
Closed shapes are restricted, intimate, vulnerable, cold, small and unsure.
Straight & angular vs. Curved & rounded
Straight and angular shapes are sharp, harsh, angry, forceful and abrupt.
Curved and rounded shapes appear loving, caring, motherly, gentle and organic.
Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical
Symmetrical shapes are planted, stable, sturdy, reliable, strong and conformed.
Asymmetrical shapes express such things as chaos, unpredictability, contrast and grotesque.
Level -
Three components: low, medium and high.
The low level is on the ground (generally floor work). Movements on this level are representative of sadness, hurt, loss, depressed, vulnerable, earthy, bound, heavy and heavy.
The medium level is the travel, transition and locomotive level. Movements on this level are stable, constant, controlled and interactive.
The high level is generally jumps, lifts or reached via the use of prop. Movements on this level are expressive of being happy, free, flying, ecstatic, emotional, fearless or having power or being unrestricted.
Active space -
Two components of active space: dynamic and symbolic.
Syllabus definition - when the space itself becomes alive, when it has meaning, or takes on symbolic suggestions of its own.
Dynamic space is when the space has its own qualities.
Symbolic space is when the space represents something else.
Performance space -
Centre front makes the dancer appear powerful, intimidating and confident.
Downstage left is intimate and makes the dancer seem weak and vulnerable.
Stage right and left and the right and left side according to the dancer when facing the audience.

Planes -
The 3 components of planes are transverse, frontal and sagittal.
Frontal - side to side, sideways or lateral movement. This is movement conducted on the 2D plane.
Sagittal - movement is forwards and background. This is movement conducted in 3D.
Transverse - horizontal and rotational movement.

Spatial relationships -
Copying - exactly mimic
Mirroring in opposition - reflecting, individuals with a common link
Complimentary - one person makes a shape and the other emphasises it. The essence of one shape in the other.
Contrasting - in battle, opposite
Floor patterns -
Paths or patterns made when travelling across a space (locomotive).
Pathways -
A pathway is the path, pattern or flow of gestures when staying on the spot (axial movement).
Dimension -
Height - tall and skinny vs. short and stubby / high vs. low
Width - fat vs. thin / wide vs. narrow
Depth - deep vs. shallow / full vs. empty
Personal space -
As far as you can reach you can reach you have a personal space bubble. This is called your kinesphere meaning "body circle"
