Important statistics:
- 80% of dancers experience a disabling injury during their careers
- 65% of dance injuries are from overuse and 35% from accidents
- 90% of injuries occur when a dancer is fatigued
- 98% of dance injuries are treated without surgery
Here we will discuss important knowledge in relation to safe dance practice that does not quite fit into the above categories but is essential to know...
Body mechanics:
Definition - Body mechanics is proper body movement and efficient functioning of the body's movement systems to prevent and correct posture problems, reduce stress on body parts, enhance physical; capabilities and perform movement soundly, with the least amount of waster energy and risk of injury.
What is involved?
- The movement of bones
- The articulation of joints
- The action of muscles
- The support provided by tendons and ligaments
- The co-ordination of all body parts to create movement
- Efficient movement with the least amount of strain or waste of energy
It is important that you know the names of your bones, joints and muscles, where they are what they do and how to stretch/strengthen them.
Bones:
There are 2 parts to the skeleton:
1) The central (axial) skeleton - this includes the head, chest and pelvis.
2) The movement (appendicular) skeleton - this includes the arms and legs.
